Haven’t done one of these since September and everything about my life is different now.
Today is the last day of the 108th Legislature Second Session!!!!!!! But there are still 2-3 bills to filibuster and vote down. It’s likely that we will have a special session perhaps in August to address tax relief that the governor wants (but at what cost) and maybe even changing our unique system of allocating electoral votes by congressional district into a winner-take-all system like most other states have.
My hope honestly is that we do not come back for a special session. But I will definitely miss my colleagues who are term limited and who I otherwise won’t work with again after today. See below for a nice photo we all took together today.
TOMORROW I am opening Ceremony at 6107 Maple St in Omaha, right next door to Five Nine, the stationery store I’ve had there for the last few years. Ceremony is mostly new, but also reworked and vintage clothing. We’re open from 1-7 tomorrow.
I can’t believe I created this store in four months. After a year or more of going back and forth, hemming and hawing, trying to make it make sense financially, on like December 29 I just decided I’m just doing it. I must thank Tony Morris, my contractor, for understanding my vision and making it happen, and quickly. The built-ins and cash wrap he created for me, in addition to all the buildout, are gorgeous.
One thing we are doing at the shop that I am excited about is CHARMS. I’ve been collecting unique sterling silver charms for about four months, and at Ceremony we will have everything you need to create a bracelet (or add to your own!) that really reflects your life.
A PHOTO BOOTH for the new shop is coming soon from Anthony Vizzari at A&A Studios Inc. in Chicago. As long as I’m taking out a business loan, it’s like, fuck it… photobooth. So excited to own this fun new toy.
Ash, age 13-almost-14, is competing in track and winning. Blows my mind—absolute gazelle.
Things I have recently bought and loved:
Instax film printer - This almost feels like cheating but I love printing my favorite photos off on instax film. Great for mood boards, for my desk, for my wallet, as little gifts for others.
These nail stickers - I have tried every brand and these are the best. I love wearing them and sharing them with other people. I have a lot of state senators - including men - wearing nail stickers.
Tooth gems - What are these if not nail stickers for your teeth? They’re not permanent. I want like 1000 - next I want a gold heart with a little diamond in the middle. I’m gonna learn how to do them myself.
Ohto Fude Pen - This is my new favorite pen. VERY thick, wet, black line. The barrel isn’t pretty but the way it writes is so satisfying.
Slices of life:
Thanks for reading. I am first and foremost a shopgirl. The best way to support me/my family/my staff, help me pay my rent, and validate the work that fulfills me is by supporting my businesses Five Nine and Ceremony. I’ve been a small business owner here in my neighborhood for 20 years and I’m so grateful to get to do this. It’s really a dream come true every day.
