no. 37: a little life update from my corner of the worldwide web
session's over, and I wish it was forever
A new bundle of joy has come into our life - a kitty!! We saw her behind the store for a few weeks, and when I pet her one day she was SO SO skinny, so I fed her, and here we are today. As cat owners know, that’s how you get a cat. She spends half her time at my house (Cricket the dog tolerates), and half the time at Five Nine. She’s perfect! The vet thinks she’s not one year old yet. My Russian Aunt says she reminds her of cats at home and “looks very Slavic.”
Three weeks ago my car got stolen. Que sera sera, these things happen… Not sure what to do now though. I keep waiting but the cops have done less than nothing (I feel paranoid/conspiratorial about that) and I know odds are it’s been scrapped by now. Insurance covered nothing because I only had liability coverage. Sooooooooo….. I’m just kinda here… chilling with no car…
New Pride Month surprise packages are on the site now! You pick how much you want to spend, and I will send you a package of things I think you will like. This month, everything in our packages is from LGBTQ+ owned businesses. 💖🌈
When session ended, I felt physically/mentally/emotionally a 1 out of 100. Today, a month later, I feel like a 3 out of 100. I’m fatigued - I could sleep 18 hours per day and not even stir - I’m sore, I’m having headaches, I’m forgetful. I get these random dizzy spells. My heart beats fast out of nowhere. It’s not like depression, which I’m familiar with for sure. It’s just depletion. It does feel like anxiety? Danny suggested it could be Long Covid which has me wondering. I’m not a Going To The Doctor person, so that’s where that stands now and will probably stay.
I got a new iPad - I haven’t had an iPad since they first came out, I didn’t get a new one after that - and I LOVE it. I was utterly influenced by Carly, who works at my shop and is a fantastic designer and creative mind. I am trying to learn on Procreate how to design some things for the shop. I have good ideas! I just have to get back into design with this new technology. I also got a keyboard, so now it’s kind of like a second monitor / touchscreen laptop. Fun new toy
It’s gotten to the point where me opening a new clothing store is inevitable. In 2019, my beloved partner Sarah and I closed Hello Holiday, our indie clothing boutique, which ended up being perfect timing before the pandemic. She went into creative consulting, which she is wildly talented and successful with, and I focused on the Legislature which I did ok with, and then I started Five Nine because I missed retail. Five Nine began as just an online store, an activity to keep me busy and creative, and then quickly an opportunity came and I took it to expand into a brick and mortar. And now another opportunity is coming and the stars are aligning and I think I will open another clothing store. It could be in a month or in four months … but it is happening. I claim! I *really* can’t wait. This stuff makes me so excited.
Baby’s first lawsuit. Today, along with the Nebraska Legal Action Fund, I filed litigation against the Nebraska Freedom Coalition and their officers Patrick Peterson, Robert Anthony and Malia Shirley for falsely accusing me of abusing and grooming my child. These false accusations from The Coalition resulted in death threats, calls to action to kidnap my child with my home address posted online, and hundreds of other tweets, phone calls, and emails accusing me of being a child abuser, pedophile, and groomer. My hope with this litigation is simply that their statements are found defamatory. I’m not in it for any money, I’m in it to make sure this doesn’t happen to other Nebraskans who are *not* public figures - teachers, healthcare providers, and family members of LGBTQ+ Nebraskans who have been accused of similar things.
A bunch of my colleagues + my son and I got to go to the White House for Pride! We also saw my brother Matt there, who works at the White House in the White House Communications Agency.
More to come. If you know someone who would like this in their inbox, forward it to them and tell your friends to subscribe. Follow me on Instagram and Twitter, too. If you have a question about navigating the system, getting a benefit, or are generally pissed at the government, contact my fed account at mhunt@leg.ne.gov. Help me pay my rent and validate the work that fulfills me by shopping at Five Nine. Take care of each other, and stay safe.
