We’re over the halfway point now in the first session of the 108th Nebraska Legislature. We are off this weekend, and return on Tuesday to debate LB 574, a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for trans and non-binary Nebraskans under age 19. The bill was introduced by freshman Sen. Kathleen Kauth who apparently rolled into the Legislature stoked to do nothing more than attack the humanity of LGBTQ kids and the families who love them. We will filibuster the bill this week and probably get to a vote on it Thursday or Friday. If the bill advances, we will filibuster every single bill on the agenda for the rest of the session. It is what it is.
It’s wild how when we get bills that are generally great ideas but have a bit of opposition, it’s broadly understood that the bill won’t pass ... but if it's anti-abortion or anti-gay, with HOURS of opposition testimony in the hearing, everyone knows that it's passing anyway. Very cool government.
I’m a big time Formula 1 girlie now. My friend Angela Garbacz who owns Goldenrod Pastries in Lincoln turned me on to it last year and I have gotten so deep into it. Anyone else? What’s your team? Mine’s Ferrari, but I also love the driver Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Angela also influenced me to buy a real leather jacket. We were in Las Vegas a few weeks ago for our friend Rebecca’s bachelorette party, and everyone had the coolest leather jackets, so I decided it was time for me to become a part of leather jacket gang. I’ve thrifted some good ones before but I had never made a very planned leather jacket purchase. I got this one. I first rented it from Rent the Runway (which I don’t use anymore, I thought it was getting a little too boring/basic and quality was going down, but if you want to try it let me know and I can send you a code) to try it on and see if I liked it, and then I found it used on Poshmark for $75. Are you kidding me?? Can’t afford to NOT get it. It arrived today and is perfect. Is Poshmark is the new Rent the Runway to me? —You can buy brand new-quality things and then easily just resell them when you’re over it.
I’ve been feeling pulled toward starting another clothing store, which I *cannot* do. I co-owned a fantastic clothing store, Hello Holiday, with my partner Sarah Lorsung Tvrdik for about 8 years, and we closed in 2019. I’ve sort of dipped my toe back into clothing retail just for fun by reconnecting with designers and adding some *new* inventory to my own Poshmark page, in addition to my regular pre-loved listings. Someday will be the right time to open another clothing retail project. It is not now. But it’s so hard to stay away.
Five gigantic boxes just landed in the shop from Japan, and that means surprise packages are back. Pens, notebooks, organizing tools, all of it super special and hard to find in the US. I’m sending it out in surprise packages before I add anything to the shop.
Buy a surprise package and I’ll send you a care package of things I think you’ll like from the shop based on what I know (or don’t know) about you. 48 hours only. Shop online and select the amount you want to spend. Online only, not available in the brick and mortar.
