Friends, I have really missed retail. It’s been one year since my partner Sarah and I closed our boutique Hello Holiday, and I’ve decided I’d like to get back into it. I also miss design, which is how I entered the world of entrepreneurship 15 years ago. Meet Five Nine, my new venture which brings together both of those passions. I’m designing again, and I love being able to connect by sharing my work with you.
It’s not that deep. It’s all for fun. It’s evolving. And I am excited to be back.
Why Five Nine? My 10-year-old daughter, Alice, has been an ongoing part of the conversation over the past several months about opening a new store. She has provided input on the inventory, the aesthetic, and the name, which is our birthday—we were both born on May 9. Alice designed a silk scarf that we are selling. It’s hand-hemmed and the perfect size.
With the remote learning we have been doing at home, having Alice be a part of launching a business has been very beneficial. From legal structure, to wholesale/retail markup, to taxes and profits, she’s a part of all of it. And she is very proud of her contribution.
My Three Simple Questions series is also coming back in the upcoming weeks. I have some very interesting and fascinating interview subjects who I am eager to share with you. You can read past editions here.
More to come. If you know someone who would like this in their inbox, forward it to them and tell your friends to subscribe. Follow me on Instagram and Twitter, too. Mask up, and stay safe!
